Help with a 2002 monte carlo power problem. Battery?

Alright the start of the problems: (may not be relevant to the current problem.)

-About 3 months ago, my traction control/ABS lights started randomly coming on and shutting off. When the lights were not on, the TC and ABS both worked, Lights on – neither works – Fair enough. about a month later (2 months ago) ABS and TC lights come on now every time I start the car, so that needs fixing. (This is the part that may have nothing to do w/ the current problem.

-2 Weeks ago, I drove to school ~30 minutes, and everything was fine and dandy. Got to school, and it’s a 20 minute walk from my car to class, or there’s a shuttle bus that comes every 15 minutes. Obviously I waited for the bus, and listened to the radio (cold day so I left the heat on/car not running for about 10 minutes). After about 10 minutes, the car died… I got a boost, started fine, ran it for about 10 minutes, shut it off and started it again (thought maybe the alternator wasn’t charging it good.). Started fine that time, and I drove home, all fine. Car has worked fine since.

-Last night I was driving the car and it worked fine. Drove home, parked it, went to bed. Woke up this morning and went to start it… dead.

-Got my dad to boost it with his truck. Still dead… dead enough that the radio doesn’t come on and the dash lights are feint.

Posts are clean, booster cables are clean.

I figured it’s the battery, so my plan is to charge it up w/ a battery charger, and take it to cdn tire to load test it. If it passes the load test though, then I don’t know what’s wrong with the car.

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be other than the battery?

Our pick of the answers:

Well I just saw this question and it’s 14 hours old so it’s probably too late. But yes. The electricity doesn’t care if it goes through a clamp or bare wire. But be careful that you don’t have gasoline fumes present and then make a spark by touching the wire to the battery. Poof! Also, if you still have the clamp that fell off the jumper cable you can use it by putting the wire between the jaw and the battery terminal (tricky with a side terminal battery) to hold it there. One more thing; someone should wire this thing in properly and eliminate the jumper cable. It’s not an expensive or complex thing to do. I’m wondering why you even need a generator. Are you off the grid?

Our pick of the answers:

The most likely problem is that you are wiring the lighter socket the wrong way round, the centre connection should be positive. Make sure you are feeding it from a fuse, and not direct from the battery. If it was wired right you must have had a faulty charger.
There’s no reason why you shouldn’t use a 12V phone charger as you propose.

It may work but not a good idea !
You may be going through a lot of fuses.
One of the items would be ok plugged in, but four is over doing it.
Most cigarette lighters are rated at 20 Amps
Besides it looks tacky and all those wires in the way

Have somebody professionally wire it for you

What will the next generation of cars run on, Hydrogen or electric?

What will the car firms go with?
Hydrogen cells that produce energy when it is filled with oxygen and hydrogen or electricity powered straight into a cars battery from a charger.

Hydrogen is looking like the preferred choice right now but battery technology is getting much better supposedly.

Thank you.

Our pick of the answers:

Electric, no question about it.

It’s more efficient, much of the infrastructure is already in place, it’s cleaner, and it’s cheaper.

There are too many roadblocks in the way of hydrogen for it to be a viable alternative on a large scale for several decades. Electric cars are virtually ready for large scale production now.

See the links below for further details.

How long does it take to recharge a car battery while driving after its been jumped?

I left my car running for an hour and then the car battery died, I jumped the car but forgot to leave it running. so an hour later I jumped it again and drove home, about 15 min. will my car be okay to start in the morning?

Our pick of the answers:

How long depends on several factors.

1) how old is the battery? If more than 6 yrs old it probably should be replaced. Older batteries develop these ‘tendrils’ or ‘dendrons’ which can inhibit the battery’s charging (same goes for rechargeable batteries – it’s why they don’t come all the way back to 1.5v after a few recycles.). Do you see any white or yellow powder built up around the terminals? If so, these must be cleaned before you try to recharge. Fortunately, fixing this is very simple. Remove the cables from the battery. Take a few cups of water and add a tsp of baking soda. Mix & pour over the terminals (they will bubble up as the baking soda neutralizes the acid.) You may need to use a bit of steel wool to help remove heavy crusts. Then rinse with clear water & dry. Apply a bit of battery terminal grease (any auto parts store has this for a couple of bucks then reattach the cables & tighten them firmly. Jump your battery properly – positive to positive, the negative of the GOOD car to a metal connection or frame of your car. NEVER connect both ends of the negative cables to batteries…they CAN & DO explode!

2) Is your alternator in good shape? A loose belt or bad alternator can take a LONG time to recharge a battery 3) Have you turned everything else off i.e. The radio, a/c or heater, lights etc? These will drain the power faster than your alternator can replenish it.

So, if you still want to recharge it, first see if there are caps on the top of the battery. If so, CAREFULLY remove them – opening them away from your face. If you can see the grills of the battery sticking up out of the liquid add distilled – NOT tap – water to the proper depth. Then replace the caps. If there are no caps yours is a sealed battery that can’t be checked.

The best way to recharge a battery is with an inexpensive battery charger rather than by jump starting it car to car. (That’s for emergencies only). Charge batteries OUTSIDE – never indoors! (I had a neighbor accidently burn his house down doing this). This way you can leave the charger on and watch to see if the recharge takes. If it won’t charge, then the battery is no good.

After you get your car running (with all accessories off) it should be checked with a battery tester. If you don’t have one leave the car running for about an hour – If it goes dead again then you have to accept the battery’s no good. If you live in a cold climate you definitely need a new battery before the next cold season.

IF the battery’s in fair shape it should take a full charge in about 4 hours or less. If it takes longer – the battery’s no good.

The laser pickup might not be working. Or the laser has weakened.

Barring repair or replacement of the laser head assembly, you can try and use it as a display, or sell it to somebody that can use it as such.

Our pick of the answers:

Read the instructions that came with the battery charger to make sure you know how your specific battery charger works.
Connect the battery charger to the battery. If the battery is connected to the car, attach the positive (usually red) charging cable to the positive post (usually marked with a plus sign). Then attach the negative (usually black) charging cable to the engine block. Do not connect the negative cable to the negative post while the battery is in the car. If the battery is not connected to the car, attach the positive charging cable to the positive post. Then attach the negative charging cable to the negative post, usually marked with a minus sign.
Turn the “Volt/Amp Selector” to the appropriate type of battery chargers as http://www.external-battery.net/products/2200mah-portable-external-battery-charger-sw-vtb-04-for-iphone-.htm and amps, and make sure that the correct “Volt” switch is selected for the size of battery.
Plug the battery charger into an appropriate outlet. If the cord has a ground, plug it into a grounded outlet. Do not alter the cord in any way.
Use the ammeter to measure battery-charging rate.
Turn the “Charge Time” to set how long you want to charge the battery. Use the ammeter to measure battery-charging rate. Use the battery test monitor to see if the battery is in working condition.
Turn the battery charger off. Unplug the battery charger from the outlet. Turn the “Selector” and the “Charge Time” to “Off.”
Remove the negative battery charging cable first, then remove the positive charging cable.

Our pick of the answers:

Reverse the polarity of the charger/jump vehicle’s cables at the positive ground car. (Black on Positive-Red on Negative terminals. Do not let any metal touch between either vehicle!

If the old Ford is a 6-volt system as most older positive ground cars were, you can still jump it with another 12v Pos. Gnd car except keep the connection times minimal (short duration such as only when cranking the Ford. The starter will go like hell and crank the old motor over pretty fast but won’t hurt anything if you keep cranking time under 10 seconds at a time (because the starter will overheat and may burn the windings if not given a few minutes to cool down after each attempt.).

I’ve had success with this method many times. The spark is hotter and the starter gives a serious spin to the old motor, making for even faster starting.

If the Ford is 12-volt, just reverse the polarity at the Ford’s battery and have at it.

6v wiring is real heavy duty stuff and can withstand a lotta current.

If you’re not a purist, you can convert the car’s electrical system to a 12v pos. Gnd system by using a DC generator for a 64 1/2 Mustang. Many auto electric shops have them rebuilt fairly cheap and there’s no physical difference between the 12 genny and the 6v one so nobody can tell the difference. Wiring is exactly the same.

He is a fool but it is possible as long as the weak battery is only weak and not DEAD. If he was to start his and let it run connected for about 5-10 minutes, that could charge yours up enough for your battery to crank it over. The biggest things to remember it that the cars dont touch each other, connect both cables on the good car isolating both cables from each other, then connect the positive to the battery on the dead cars battery, then connect the last cable to the engine block on the dead car. After that start it up and let it idle like that for 10 minutes like i said before.

Is it dangerous or bad to jump start a motorcycle with a car or car battery?

A mechanic told me that the car battery will send too much power to the motorcycle and can break parts or even cause a fire. He says that I’ve just gotten lucky the times that I have done it. I’m an electrician, but not with DC and car battery type stuff, of course.

He says it is also bad to jump start a small car with a big pickup truck for the same reason, just not as bad.
Cars, pickups (even my two battery diesel), and motorcycles are all 12V systems, so that’s not the issue.

I also thought that it should be the same as household AC, in that the starter only pulled the amperage that it needed. But this mechanic (who is actually pretty good at fixing motorcycles that we buy and sell) says otherwise and that it’s like pushing your car‘s 700A through a system designed for only 14A or so. I’m not an expert when it comes to batteries and DC systems.

Our pick of the answers:

As long as both vehicles have the same voltage battery (12V) then it is perfectly safe to do this, AS LONG AS THE CAR IS NOT RUNNING.

Reason: The car or truck, if it is not running, is only going to send 12V. All you are doing is ensuring a full 12V goes to the motorcycle starter. No problem.

Now, if the car is running, that is a different issue. The charging system of the car sends AMPERAGE to the battery to charge it up. The car system sends a higher amp charge than the motorcycle battery can handle. So yes, you can damage your motorcycle battery this way, but only if the car is running.

Car wouldn’t start – dead battery. Jump or replace battery?

My car wouldn’t start last evening. I called the road side assistance, and got the car jump started. I let it run for 20 mins, and started to drive away. When I stopped at a stop sign, the car died and I couldn’t restart again. I called the emergency service and got a jump start again. This time I was able to drive it all the way to my place (~20 miles).

I got in the car this morning, and I am not able to start the car again. This is really frustrating. I was hoping the battery would have been enough last night. Do you suggest I try to jump start it again or get a new battery?

Important note: The car was in storage for 9 months. I just took it out two weeks back. While in storage, I did not take the battery out but unhooked the wires. When I went to get my car out, I was able to start the car right away without a jump. Since I took the car out, I have driven more than 1000 miles without any problem.

Our pick of the answers:

Please look at the new Canon Powershot SD850-IS. This is a very versatile camera that meets your specifications. It has a nice workable zoom range that will take you from broad scenics to decent telephoto views. Look at some sample images from the reviews on the SD700-IS to get the idea what this lens will cover. It has image stabilization, which really works. It is small enough to fit into a shirt pocket. It has a rechargeable battery that is good for 200-250 shots, depending on how much zooming and viewing you do or on how many shots use the flash. A spare battery is 1¾”x1¼”x¼” and the charger is barely twice that size, so carrying the spare is easy and packing the charger is easy. It has an optical viewfinder which can be useful when the sun is too bright to see the image on your LCD monitor. I could go on, but you can read some reviews and see what the pro’s say.

Click on “Read Owner Opinions,” which are mini-reviews by buyers. You can also read the full review on the SD700-IS by clicking on that option.

The upgrades for the SD850-IS are:
Canon Digic III image processor instead of Digic II
8 MP instead of 6 MP
Maximum ISO 1600 instead of ISO 800
Accepts up to 4 GB memory card instead of 2 GB
LCD monitor has better image
Face detection

I listed these in the order of importance, in my opinion. The first two are the ones that really count the most and the rest are just gravy.

B&H Photo has this camera for $310 and they will have suitable memory cards (1 GB or more) for $20-30.

Many of us trust and recommend B&H Photo. I have been using them for many years without a single problem. B&H Photo is available through a link at Yahoo! Shopping, www.bhphoto.com or at 1-800-622-4987. See also http://www.resellerratings.com/store/B_H_Photo_Video_Pro_Audio

Our pick of the answers:

The batteries that came with your camera are perfectly fine to use. But, they won’t last for long because they don’t hold much power. So, they’re not the type of battery you should use all the time because they drain too quickly and you have to buy new ones again and again and again. They’re fine for emergencies, but other than that, they’re a complete waste of money.

For cost effectiveness and better power, you need to buy rechargeable NiMH batteries (2500mAh or higher) and a charger. These batteries need to be charged, used and charged again a few times before they reach maximum charge capacity. They also drain when not used. So, you need to make sure you give them a charge…especially if you haven’t used your camera in a while.

The only other good power option is non rechargeable Lithium batteries. Energizer make 2 types. One provides up to 8x more power than regular alkalines and the other, up to 4x more power. These are quite dear to buy, but are perfect as a backup battery. The great thing about these batteries is that they don’t drain like the NiMhs. They have an incredible storage life of 10-15 years…making them perfect as an emergency backup battery.

Good luck…

P.s. Don’t forget that your LCD screen uses most of your battery power. So, try to turn it off in-between shots and limit how long you spend reviewing images and playing around with the Menu. Also limit using the flash and recording movies because these also use lots of battery power. Even zooming in and out needs lots of power. And, if your camera has continuous AF (Auto Focus) that also uses lots of power. So, I recommend you turn it off if your camera has it.

Our pick of the answers:

The battery on my Nikon D90 is amazing. To borrow a phrase, it just keeps on going and going. My closest similar experience was a 3 day shoot that I averaged about 100 pix a day. I didn’t drain the battery. If I had no way to charge batteries, I’d try to take about 6 batteries for an 11 day trek.

To conserve battery power, I’d shut off the automatic image review, p 163 in the menu. Also he will need to keep the batteries warm (inside pocket).

If this trek includes a vehicle, e.g. Jeep, I’d take an inverter (converts car battery to AC) and my charger and the 3 batteries he has.

Maybe of equal importance is the number of memory cards he is taking. If he is taking a couple hundred photos a day in Fine + NEF, he will eat about 8GB a day, so he’ll need about 11 or 12 8GB cards.

Thanks for the email solicitation.

Our pick of the answers:

Two things -

Batteries.
Both these cameras take rechargeable batteries only.
That’s okay if you’re near a mains supply or carry a car/mains charger.
Probably carry a spare battery that you can recharge where you can.
A camera that takes AA batteries would be better. Not only can you carry a set of rechargeables and charger but you can get disposables most places. There are even solar chargers available for AA batteries. Rechargeable AAs are also useful for torches, radios and with one of those little adapter thingies, emergency power for mobile phones.

Second there’s robustness.
Neither of these cameras are built to survive any rough handling. And damp will kill them overnight if you get caught in the rain.
Those extending lenses are prone to getting sand, grit and fluff in there that jam them, rendering the camera useless.
Look at getting one of the waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, freezeproof cameras offered by most manufacturers. Cameras like these…

These will survive if you do.
The only problem is that none of them use AA batteries
